The Single family, developers of the AGCOPTER / Single Shot weed sensor
The Story

Ten years of R&D on a working farm

Award-winning farmer John Single and his sons — Ben, an aerospace engineer, and Tony, an agronomist and farmer — operate a grain farm in New South Wales, Australia.

They recognized the need for precision weed detection to manage herbicide resistance and cut the cost of weed control on their own farm, but they were unhappy with the boom-based optical weed-sensing systems they had been using.

The family’s own skills, combined with a team of roboticists, were enough to solve it. Over ten years they developed the AGCOPTER / Single Shot drone-based weed detection sensor — a system designed by farmers, for farmers, to be cheaper to purchase and operate, and to detect smaller weeds more reliably than sprayer-mounted systems.
